Bread To Live By

Matthew 4:4  –  Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

The two most common Greek words for the “word(s)” of God in the Bible are Logos and Rhema.  The most common definition for Logos is the written word of God in the Bible.  The Bible defines itself by staying the words in the Bible are the words of God and are “God Breathed” All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 2 Tim. 3:16.  In Matt 4:4, man shall not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.  The Rhema is defined as the revealed word of God, as an utterance from God to the heart of the receiver by the Holy Spirit.  John 14:26 the Rhema and the Logos are both under significant scrutiny these days. the Rhema word of God is at hand in this verse and Jesus has placed hearing from God directly front and center today.  We need to hear from God for our lives, songs, direction, and supporting others around us.   A word study would suggest this definition for the word Rhema  (“spoken-word”) is commonly used in the NT for the Lord speaking His dynamic, living word in a believer to in-birth faith (“His inwrought persuasion”).

God speaking to the heart of man.

We all have struggled with the idea of hearing from God personally and discerning if it is HIM or just our mind speaking, playing tricks.  And, harder still, hearing for someone we care about with the boldness to share it.  We all give disclaimers as we are unsure of the origin of what we think is from God.  And yet, time and again, the word we have and give is accurate, specific and life giving to each other.   Is it wrong to be wrong? I mean, is it wrong to say what is on our heart and be wrong?  I suggest it’s ok!  Step out into it.  I say we need to press into the Rhema and keep working at hearing from God, taking steps of faith on what we hear and telling each other…because it is bread to live by.  Step out!   I believe you will find you are hearing more than you realize and are helping spread faith and truth as you venture out.

Press in.  Trust what you are hearing. The Rhema is bread.
